The name 'Mocha Choco Latte' is inspired by the three divas from the Moulin Rouge who made this song famous amongst a whole new generation. It inspires the mood of the music we play, and reflects the three distinct flavours of the vocalists....

The “Mocha” flavour is Marie Thomson, or "Ree" as she's known in the 'biz' and is a relative newcomer to Mocha Choco Latte but not to being in front of a crowd. With musical influences ranging from old school rock n roll and jazz to Hip Hop, classical, theatre and blues - it's no wonder why Ree is our new Mocha with such an eclectic blend of styles.

The “Choco” flavour comes from Fiona Buchet, the white girl with Jamaican ancestry (yes, Jamaican – check out the hair) whose voice has the edge to carry hits by P!nk, and the soul to sing the likes of Joss Stone.  Fi belts out the old motown hits by Aretha Franklin and Phoebe Snow, right through to today’s nu-soul artists including Amy Winehouse and Alice Russell.

Finally, the “Latte” flavour is introduced to the mix by Debra Rock-Evans, whose passion for all things 70's, 80's and 90's pop and rock sees her crack out the timeless classics by artists such as the Eurythmics, Prince (what a legend), the B52’s and Michael Jackson as well as modern favourites such as Bruno Mars and Maroon 5. Debs infectious presence and fun energy will get you moving on the dance floor in no time.

The funky rhythm section has Kerry Davis on bass and Joe Moe on drums, and the new grooves of Matt Fitzpatrick on lead guitar.  With a over 50 years combined experience and more than 1000+ gigs between them, this tight little band of brothers can keep the pace up for hours.

Ree Thompson

Ree Thompson

Marie Thomson, or "Ree" as she's known in the 'biz, is a relative newcomer to Mocha Choco Latte but not to being in front of a crowd. Involved in many musical and stage productions ("Grease" and "Little Shop of Horrors" were her favourite) Ree's interest in singing  developed into an active passion.

Her passion is evident in her memorable on-stage vibe, this girl just can't stop dancing!

Singing with Deb Rock-Evans and Matt Fitzpatrick in the Julie Lamb Band", and also with Matt in a four piece multi-genre ensemble "The Groove" gives Ree the opportunity to burst out singing wherever she wants and reason it as "practicing". Ree also plays the guitar (air and acoustic).

Trivia:

  • What's the coolest thing that ever happened to you that's related to music?

The fact that I'm able to play music is the coolest thing I reckon

  • If you had a theme song to sum up your life what would it be?

It's a beautiful day by Queen

  • What's been your most embarrassing moment in a live performance?

Mainly wardrobe malfunctions that I've banished from memory. Nip slip and a bit of butt cheek here and there lol!

Choco

Fiona Buchet

Fiona Buchet

Fiona Buchet has been singing with various Wellington covers and originals bands since 2009.  She enjoys being both a lead vocalist and a backing vocalist, so MCL is the perfect opportunity to be both!  Fiona is a versatile vocalist, currently involved with both with MCL and a rock band Io, so between the two projects has all the genres covered.

Trivia:

  • If you had a theme song to sum up your life what would it be?

Being a spiritually-minded person, my theme song to life would be 'You Got The Love' by Candi Staton.

  • What's been your most embarrassing moment in a live performance?

Apart from occasionally forgetting the words at pivotal moments, I haven't really had any embarrassing experiences.....yet!  It's been a steep learning curve to get to this point, and I'm loving every step :)

Latte

Deb Rock-Evans

Deb Rock-Evans

Not one who’s afraid of being on stage (thanks to encouraging parents from an early age) Debra Rock-Evans has been singing and performing in Wellington ‘for real’ since 2007. Starting with a few gigs with the Music Works ‘Weekend Warriors’ programme, she became a student of David Feehan and through this connection has met and performed with a number of singers in their bands as a backing vocalist. She was a founding member of the Wellington a cappella group 10DD and she she currently performs around the country with the Julie Lamb Band, however Mocha Choco Latte is her ‘main gig’.

Debs rich voice can adapt to a variety of genres and styles and she has a knack for remembering lyrics and filling in gaps. Energetic and vivacious on stage she’s also known as a ‘one take wonder’ in the studio and has been involved in recording several albums.

Trivia:

  • What's the coolest thing that ever happened to you that's related to music?

I worked in London for the producer of the Brit Awards and got to meet Stevie Wonder, Annie Lennox and Robbie Williams in one day!

  • If you had a theme song to sum up your life what would it be?

Daydream Believer - cos I am one!

  • What's been your most embarrassing moment in a live performance?

As an adult I’ve been pretty lucky to avoid embarrassing hiccups when performing but as a child I have memories of my dad making me get up on stage and singing Annies ‘Tomorrow’ to a crowd of people at a conference in Singapore with a backing band who didn’t know the song! Well… why would they? The experience set me up for all future performances though!

Joe

Joe Moe (Photography: My Heart Follows)

Joe Moe has been playing in various cover and original bands for the last 26 years.

Supported and inspired by a performing musical family, he’s experienced performing arts, Battle of the Bands, corporate/charity functions, television, theatre, live and recording studio work playing drums, percussion, dance and backing vocals.

Joe can also play Guitar, Bass and Piano.

His musical tastes are varied and still growing as he now appreciates more styles including Soul, Rock, Funk, Reggae, Hip Hop, Country, R n B, Jazz, House, Techno, Drum n Bass, Latin and multi-cultural influences of foreign countries where drums/percussion are at the foremost.

Trivia:

  • What's the coolest thing that ever happened to you that's related to music?

Some of my best experiences have been meeting/playing with Top Kiwi musicians, actors and vocalists.

  • If you had a theme song to sum up your life what would it be?

The best song to sum me up would be "Happy" by Pharrell because I am most of the time, even when I'm sad.

  • What's been your most embarrassing moment in a live performance?

Most embarrassing time would be forgetting my Drum sticks before a gig!

Kerry

Multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter, Kerry Davis has always had music 'in his blood'. Starting out at the tender age of 11; playing drums for a small town Country and Western band, his passion for music has always been an important and enriching part of his life and will be for many years to come.

Trivia:

  • What's the coolest thing that ever happened to you that's related to music?

Discovering the Funk

  • If you had a theme song to sum up your life what would it be?

Funkadelic - Hit it and quit it

  • What's been your most embarrassing moment in a live performance?

Played the 'Low Funk' instead of the 'High Funk'

Bonus Trivia:

His self produced tune called 'Tindub' was released on the 'Dub combinations 3' album in 2002. Amazingly, this tune appeared on the same album as the person who had inspired him to write it, International Observer aka Tom Bailey, ex-lead singer of the British 80's pop group the Thompson Twins!

Matt

Matt Fitzpatrick

Matt Fitzpatrick

Guitar Meister Matt Shane Fitzpatrick has been playing and performing in various originals and covers bands around Wellington since 2008, including The Julie Lamb Band, and in April 2016 joined Mocha Choco Latte.

While continuing to study music, his love of 60’s, 70’s and modern day blues, funk and soul music gives new flavours and energy to the Mocha sound and helps keep a wonderful thing going!

Being “All about that Groove” and having a good time, he fits right in with the Mocha Choco Latte crew.

Trivia:

  • What's the coolest thing that ever happened to you that's related to music?

I'd have to say "getting that feeling of awesomeness from the first Jam I had with my older brothers years ago, and wanting to pursue that feeling"

  • If you had a theme song to sum up your life what would it be?

Funky Crime - Red Hot Chilli Peppers

  • What's been your most embarrassing moment in a live performance?

Having my guitar lead cut out right before a guitar solo mid song
